Roofing in the Old Mill Town
Riverton grew up around the textile mill on the east bank, and much of the town still shows it: tight streets of mill-era cottages near the water, brick storefronts along Bridge Street, and newer subdivisions climbing the bluff on the west side. The mill-era cottages are simple gable roofs on plank decking, most carrying several generations of shingles. Their attics are tight and poorly vented, so winter condensation collects on the underside of the deck, and we find rot around the bath fan and pipe penetrations. A proper roof replacement in Riverton on these houses means a tear-off to the boards, solid sheathing where the planks have gapped, and balanced intake and exhaust vents so the new shingles last their full rated life.
Up on the bluff, the newer subdivisions have the opposite issue: full wind exposure. A lifted shingle tab lets the next gust get under the course above it, and after a windy front we find creased and torn shingles on the west-facing slopes.
