Where Skylights Go Wrong
A skylight earns its reputation at the flashing. The kit in the box works when each piece of step flashing is woven into the shingle courses and the membrane laps the curb in the right order. The leaking units we replace around Madison County almost always show the same shortcut: flashing laid on top of the shingles with a bead of sealant standing in for layered metal. The foggy acrylic bubbles from the 1980s are their own category, cracked, yellowed, and overdue for retirement.
Adding a unit during a reroof costs the least, since the courses are already open. Either way, we wrap the curb in ice and water membrane before a single shingle goes back.
